LOS ANGELES, Calif. For those with allergies and/or dietary restrictions, dining out can be complicated. Edible is the first app of its kind that simplifies their experience by allowing them to filter menu items based on their specific dietary needs.
1 in 5 Americans today have dietary restrictions, and that amount is steadily increasing. This means that a lot of people are having to interrogate the waitstaff every time they dine out to determine what they are able to eat. Edible is the first app of its kind that shows those with dietary restrictions exactly what they’ll be able to eat before leaving home.
Officially launched in Los Angeles this month, Edible allows users to filter by diets such as vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian. Users can then view the menu item’s price, description and restaurant location in addition to being able to vote on their favorite dishes, read and write reviews. The app contains more than 500 restaurants and 20,000 food items, with more being added every week. The restaurants in the app span all major Los Angeles neighborhoods.
Recent University of Michigan graduates and co-founders of the Edible project, Ish Baid and Michael Copley, know firsthand how difficult it is to dine out with dietary restrictions. Copley’s allergies are what inspired the creation of Edible.
“Mike has a dairy allergy,” said Baid, “It can take him a really long time to figure out what he can eat, which means it takes our entire table a really long time to get our food.”
Edible is empowering users to eat in ways that suit their lifestyle by bringing health, diet, and allergy information to their fingertips. The Edible app is available for iPhone and Android today and can be downloaded at:
